1988 and 1989 AAA's 1500m

Maybe Seb "hawk-spit" Coe wasn't so bad after all - if the last 60 seconds of this YouTube clip from 1989 are anything to go by.

Here's a clip from 1988 too.

Hall of Fame: Ovett on UK Athletics web site

I voted recently via Athletics Weekly for Steve Ovett to be entered into the UK Hall of Fame.

Interesting article with a sad ending.

Get Ovett in!

Sounds like he is as controversial as ever. I know he wanted to get involved with the administration of athletics years ago but maybe now is the time, with Coe running 2012. It certainly wouldn't be dull!

Here's an article on the BBC web site.

Men at Work: Land Down Under

iTunes' Party Shuffle mode took me back two and a half decades to this song in early 1982 - roughly when Steve Ovett ran into the church railings and nearly ended his career. For those of you who think he actually did, remember that he set another 1500m world record in 1983 before the troubles in LA in 1984 and moving up to 5000m for Commonwealth gold in 1986.

Mentioning athletics, Henry Rono replied to my message on the forum the other day and I'm a couple of chapters into his book. Great so far. Here is a video on YouTube of Steve Ovett setting a new World Record for 2 miles against Henry Rono in 1978.

My stalkers who are fond of asking me questions on the various types of desert can find some decent music on YouTube

Latest Steve Ovett item

This is a shot of the cover of the November 1978 edition of Track and Field News

There are some good quotes in there, including one very sarcastic one about all the hard work put in by sports journalists in the bar before interviewing him, which all led to him not talking to the press.

There's also a list of his PBs from age 14 onwards which I'll add in some time.

The stat that struck me most though is the 37bpm of his heart at rest...

Steve Ovett: Moscow 1980, 1500m Gold Medal Ceremony

Here is an image of the latest addition to my Steve Ovett collection.

It's from the 1500m medal ceremony of the 1980 Moscow Olympics, where he won gold, beating Seb Coe (hawk-spit) into second place.

Can you imagine being that good?
